2026 Vineyard Symphony Orchestra
Call for Scores (Southern California Composers)


Submission Fee: $20.00 (Contact us if there are any financial hardships)

Submission Deadline: March 31, 2026 (11:59 PM PST)

Recording Fee for Composers Chosen: $50.00 recording fee

The Vineyard Symphony Orchestra (VSO) of Glendale, California invites submissions from composers currently residing in Southern California. Composers may submit one short work for symphony orchestra for consideration. At least three (3) selected works will receive a live performance in Glendale, California in June 2026.

The mission of the Vineyard Symphony Orchestra is to provide a high-quality orchestra dedicated to performing new works by Southern California composers, while also offering professional and semi-professional musicians opportunities to perform contemporary music and rarely performed works by historically significant composers. VSO is a non-profit organization supported entirely by grants and donations.

Selection & Performance Information
  • Score submission deadline: March 31, 2026 (11:59 PM PST)
  • Selections announced: On or around April 30, 2026
  • Performance date: June 13, 2026
  • Final parts due: May 12, 2026
  • Conductor: Alan Medak, Music Director


The selection committee consists of VSO board members, including Composer-in-Residence L. C. Harnsberger and composer/orchestrator Charles Fernandez.

Eligibility & Requirements

Duration:
  • No longer than 7 minutes


Instrumentation (maximum):
Woodwinds
  • 2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo)
  • 2 oboes
  • 2 B♭ clarinets (no bass clarinet)
  • 2 bassoons


Brass
  • 4 horns
  • 2 B♭ trumpets
  • 2 trombones
  • Bass trombone
  • Tuba


Keyboard / Harp
  • Harp
  • Piano / keyboard


Percussion
  • Timpani (3 drums)
  • 2 additional percussionists (standard percussion only, glockenspiel permitted; no marimba, vibraphone, chimes or other pitched percussion)


Strings
  • Standard string section


Additional requirements:
  • No electronics or click track
  • Works with soloists (e.g., concertos) may be submitted; however, the composer is responsible for securing and coordinating with the soloist. VSO will not contract a soloist for virtuosic works.
  • Previously performed works are eligible; however, composers selected for a VSO performance are not eligible for consecutive concert performances.
  • Composers must currently reside in Southern California at the time of submission and performance.
  • Any questions regarding instrumentation or percussion requirements must be submitted to the Vineyard Symphony Orchestra in advance of submission. The VSO reserves the right to disqualify works that do not conform to the stated instrumentation guidelines.

Submission Process
  1. Complete the online submission form HERE 
  2. Upload your score and recording in the submission form.
  3. Follow the directions in the Submission form to submit the registration donation.

All programming decisions are at the sole discretion of the Vineyard Symphony Orchestra. Works will be evaluated on instrumentation, duration, performability, and artistic merit. All decisions are final.

If a score is chosen, composers will pay a recording fee of $50.00 for a professional video recording which will be available to the composers for any non-commercial use. (If the fee is a financial burden, please contact us for a waiver at the time you are confirmed to have been chosen.)
