This fall’s symphonic program Bridging the Centuries is more than a concert—it’s a community effort. Presented by the newly formed Vineyard Symphony Orchestra in partnership with Forest Lawn Glendale, the event on October 25th at 7:30 PM brings together professional musicians who have all volunteered their time to perform a program of new symphonic works alongside a classic masterwork. Admission is free.

The concert opens with Giuseppe Verdi’s Overture to Nabucco, a fiery and politically charged prelude that introduced one of the composer’s earliest operatic triumphs. The heart of the evening, however, is its commitment to new music. Original works by Dallas Crane, Brooke deRosa, Charles Fernandez, L. C. Harnsberger, Maria Newman, and Larry Tuttle showcase the vitality of local composers whose credits span concert halls, opera, ballet, film, and video games.

Two soloists take center stage in featured premieres. Hornist John Mason performs the world premiere of Concerto for Horn and Orchestra “Christmas Concerto” by L. C. Harnsberger, a complex work that blends classical elegance with virtuosic flair. And oboist Francisco Castillo offers a deeply expressive reading of Elegy by Charles Fernandez, a meditative piece that explores themes of loss and remembrance.

This FREE performance will take place in the historic Hall of Crucifixion-Resurrection at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale. The building’s stunning architecture was inspired by the 14th-century gothic Orvieto Cathedral in Italy, and is home to the enormous and awe-inspiring painting “The Crucifixion” by artist Jan Styka.

Together, these selections form a program that spans centuries in style and spirit—bridging the grandeur of the symphonic past with the immediacy of contemporary expression. Radio personality Jennifer Miller Hammel is the master of ceremonies and will provide illuminating perspectives of each piece.

This concert is more than a performance; it is a gift from the community to the community. With musicians, composers, and presenters all donating their time and talents, Bridging the Centuries stands as a celebration of local artistry, cultural generosity, and the enduring power of music to bring people together.
